Hi, I’m Kate, the maker behind Modern Crafts Lab, based in Estonia.
I create machine embroidery designs, sewing projects, and practical 3D printing files for makers and artists who love thoughtful tools and beautiful details. I also enjoy experimenting with different techniques and materials, exploring how ideas evolve across them.
Where it started
My creative journey began in childhood, sewing clothes for dolls.
In 2003, my parents bought me my first sewing machine – and that’s when everything became more real. I started sewing for myself, then for others, and over time, this grew into something much bigger.
In 2008, I bought my first embroidery machine, opening a completely new direction for me and shaping the way I work today.
As an adult, I returned to dolls in a different way – collecting them, creating my own, and exploring new techniques along the way. Through this, I developed a wide range of skills, from sculpting to photography.
Exploring and experimenting
I love working with different techniques – from embroidery and sewing to weaving, fabric printing, and 3D modeling.
Inspiration
I’m based in Estonia, where quiet landscapes, soft light, and subtle seasonal changes shape the way I see color and texture – often calm, layered, and detail-oriented.
Travel is a big part of my creative process. I’m especially drawn to museums; they give me endless ideas and visual inspiration. Colors, textures, patterns, and small details I notice along the way often become the starting point for new designs.
Somewhere between these experiences, my ideas take shape – balancing calm and contrast, simplicity and layered detail.
