If you sew regularly, you probably know this feeling – needles everywhere, different packs, and somehow never the one you need.
This simple needle organizer solves that problem. It keeps everything in one place, looks beautiful, and is surprisingly easy to make.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you step by step how to make it – and you can download the free pattern below.
Why You Need a Needle Organizer
This project is especially useful if:
- you have multiple types of needles
- you like keeping your tools organized
- you want something compact and easy to carry
- you enjoy simple, practical sewing projects

To make this needle organizer, you will need:
- thick cardboard – for the outer cover
- thicker cardboard ~1 mm – for the inner parts
- fabric or leather – for the outer cover
- fabric – for the inner parts
- felt – for holding the needles
- magnetic snap
- scissors
- glue (suitable for cardboard, fabric, and leather)

How to Make a Needle Organizer
Step 1 – Cut all pieces
Cut all cardboard pieces using the pattern.
1 large outer piece → from regular thick cardboard
3 smaller inner pieces → from thicker cardboard
Step 2 – Mark folds and snap position
On the large piece:
- mark fold lines
- mark where the magnetic snap will go
- carefully cut the opening for the snap
Step 3 – Prepare the fabric
Before gluing:
- wash or steam natural fabric (to prevent shrinking)
- press it well
- leave extra fabric for folding around edges
If you don’t want glue to soak through the fabric, you can use fusible web (appliqué interfacing). Apply it to the wrong side of the fabric first, then attach the fabric to the cardboard. This creates a barrier and keeps the front side clean.
Step 4 – Cover the outer piece
Glue fabric to the outer cardboard piece.
Then:
- fold edges to the back
- glue them neatly
While doing this, keep folding and unfolding the base to make sure the fabric doesn’t create tension.
It actually helps to glue the fabric while the piece is slightly folded.
Step 5 – Cover the inner pieces
Before covering the inner pieces with fabric, cut the opening for the magnetic snap on one of them.
Then cover the pieces with fabric:- glue the fabric to the cardboard
- fold and glue the edges neatly on the back
Step 6 – Cover the folds (hinges)
Cover the inner folds of the organizer.
If using leather → glue a strip directly
If using fabric → fold the edges before gluing to prevent fraying
Avoid thick materials here – they will add unnecessary bulk.
Step 7 – Install the magnetic snap
Install the magnetic snap before attaching the inner parts.
Before assembling everything:
- attach one part to the outer piece
- attach the second part to the inner piece
Take your time here – it’s better to check placement twice than redo it later.
Step 8 – Assemble the base
Glue the inner pieces onto the outer cover.
At this point, your organizer is almost complete.
Step 9 – Prepare felt strips
Cut felt strips for holding needles.
width → depends on your needles
length → slightly shorter than inner panels
Mine strips are about 30 mm (1 1/8 inch) wide (one is slightly narrower for finer needles) and about 76 mm (3 inches) long, but you can adjust the size to fit your needs.
If you’re working with your own measurements, you can use my cm & mm to inches converter (with ruler fractions) to get values that are easy to measure on a real ruler.
If your felt is thick → use a single layer.
If thin → cut double width, cut a strip that is twice as wide. Then fold both long edges toward the center so they meet in the middle, and press the strip flat. When attaching the strip, apply glue along the center seam (where the edges meet).
Step 10 – Attach felt strips
Glue the felt strips in place using fabric glue.
Plan the layout first, then attach them.
I ended up with 8 felt holders.
Step 11 – Let it dry
Let everything dry completely.
Ideally, leave it closed and place it under light pressure.
Step 12 – Organize your needles
Now you can place your needles inside ✨
